This is such great practical advice.  It is so helpful to have the context for the elevator speech (all of the participant examples) and other business components be part of the writing process.  It is very easy to get so focused on just writing the book that the real reason and fit for it in your business falls to the side.

A confused prospect doesn’t buy; a confused colleague doesn’t refer. The reason I start off with that exercise is to see if this person should even be writing a book. If you can’t articulate in a sentence or two, what you actually do, you need to go back to the drawing board. Thanks for your comment Jennifer.

A confused prospect doesn’t buy; a confused colleague doesn’t refer. That’s why I start the seminar with that exercise: if you are unable to answer succinctly “How do I help people?”, you have no business writing a book for business.

Just finished looking and taking notes! This was so timely before I hit the ground running! Thanks Alicia. I spoke with you a few months ago. I did in fact finish my book it comes out Feb 2012!

This is such an amazing webinar! Very practical and useful for young entrepreneurs. I’ve been struggling with my elevator pitch for some time and been learning to simplify. This is definitely an exercise I will be putting in practise.

Even “old” entrepreneurs have trouble articulating how they help individuals. An ‘elevator’ pitch is an opportunity to spark people’s interest so they’re eager to learn more. Brevity and consistency is important, because “a confused prospect doesn’t buy; a confused colleague doesn’t refer!” Thanks for your compliments Grace.

Congratulations Marica! Here’s to hitting the ground running in 2012. It’s great to get updates from people who’ve I consulted with (or who have read my ebooks) that they have gone on to complete their books. Congratulations!
